How effective Is therapy via Zoom and other virtual technologies?

Some people have wondered if something gets missed if therapy is not done face to face.  I also had some trepidation at the beginning of COVID but was open to it since I had done it that way with some people before. Usually with people who lived out of state or clients when they were on vacation or moved.

I have been doing virtual therapy full-time since March and have been so pleasantly surprised. What I am noticing is that through teletherapy, I get to see my clients in a different and more connected way. When you come to my office, you see me, my office, my furniture, and my style. When I see you virtually, I get to see more about YOU and your life. I see you with your dog or cat walking by or on your lap. I sometimes see your children. Many of you have shown me things that have meaning to you: your creative artwork, your hobbies, completed projects you are proud of, the instruments you play, your creations, etc. I have met other significant people or family members living your house who are important to you. Or, I have seen you in YOUR office giving me a sense of where and how you spend a big part of your time and energy. Some of you prefer to meet outside and have done therapy on your patio, porch, backyard, or balcony where you feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Not everyone chooses to share the things mentioned above and that is OK too. Even then, I find that through teletherapy, we connect just as well as face to face. There is no lack of seeing expressions and affect (yours and mine!) online.

Initially, people liked the convenience of not having to drive to my office. Most people have asked me if we could continue this way even if I go back to the office. Yes, I will continue this way for those who want it.

I feel teletherapy is just as effective as in person. I like what it offers in terms of connection and convenience. Convenience for those who prefer to be home or at their office and who want to minimize their drive time. I have no immediate plans to go back to the office but will let you know when I do. In the meantime, if you have any hesitation, I hope this helps you decide.
